English

This study aims to identify and analyze the visual and semantic networks surrounding the lexeme “night” in Hafez’s ghazals. The central problem addressed in the study is that “night” in Hafez’s poetry is not merely a natural phenomenon or a signifier with a temporal meaning; rather, in many cases, through its association with a range of linguistic and literary signs, it becomes a focal point for the formation of new signification. The study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach and is based on the collection of evidence from Hafez’s poetry in which the word “night” or its derivatives and compounds occurs. The meaningful collocations of this lexeme are then identified, classified, and examined from visual and semantic perspectives. In the analysis, the concept of Figure and Ground in cognitive poetics is also employed to distinguish between cases in which “night” functions as a prominent and focal element of the image and those in which it primarily serves as a background or temporal setting. The findings show that the lexeme “night” occurs in approximately 140 verses of Hafez’s poetry and is associated with 34 visual and semantic contexts or networks, which can be classified into four broad domains: social/ cultural, literary, historical/ mythological, and natural. Some of these relations are primarily natural or temporal, whereas in other cases, the literary, cultural, and historical contexts associated with night play an active role in image formation. Consequently, “night” in Hafez’s ghazals emerges as a dynamic and multilayered signifier whose position shifts from background to visual focus, and this shift contributes to the formation of rhetorical relations and cultural and literary associations.
